Acupuncture and Sleep: Can Acupuncture treat Insomnia? (2)

How does Acupuncture help Insomnia?

Multiple studies have demonstrated acupuncture to be an effective treatment for insomnia. According to studies, acupuncture are able to:
  • Lessens anxiety.
  • Stimulates melatonin production.
  •  Induces sleep onset.
  • Reduce sleep disruption and arousal during the night.

All of these effects amount to an overall increase in total sleep time. In some instances, acupuncture is used as a treatment not for insomnia itself, but for pain from other physical conditions that in turn make it difficult to fall asleep at night.

Acupuncture Outperforms Drug For Insomnia Relief

A research published by Zhejiang Chinese Medical University finds acupuncture more effective than a powerful sleep drug for improving sleep duration, quality, latency, efficiency, and daytime functioning. Acupuncture achieved a 92.9% total effective rate and the drug zopiclone achieved a 67.9% total effective rate.

Zopiclone is a central nervous system depressant used for helping patients fall asleep and maintaining sleep throughout the night. The Zhejiang Chinese Medical University research indicates that acupuncture is more effective than zopiclone for improving these sleep parameters.

Zopiclone is limited to short-term use because patients develop tolerance or dependence, risking the possibility of addiction. Although a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent used as a sedative, zopiclone enhances GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) via benzodiazepine receptors. Consequently, withdrawal symptoms are similar to those of benzodiazepines. The research indicates that acupuncture is an effective alternative without the adverse effects associated with drug intake.

Prepare for an Acupuncture treatment

While acupuncture is a low-risk procedure, there are some best practices you can follow to ensure your appointment goes as smoothly as possible:
  1. Seek out a professional acupuncturist.
  2. Don’t come on an empty stomach: Eat no later than two hours before your appointment, but do ensure you eat something. Otherwise, you can feel light-headed or fatigued during or after the session.
  3. Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of your appointment: Caffeine is a stimulant and can counteract the effects of acupuncture, which is designed to relax you.
  4. Wear loose and comfortable clothing.
